I have developed and taught courses to help current and future scientists, engineers, and science communicators use their Spanish-language skills in scientific and technical contexts. My work is part of the growing area of Spanish for Science and Technology (SST), a subfield of what is known as Spanish for Specific Purposes (SSP). I am also very interested in the closely-related area of Spanish for environmental communication.

I believe that, as part of a comprehensive approach to applied language learning, it is important for students, whether in the humanities, the sciences, or engineering, to think critically about the social, cultural, and historical processes that have shaped and continue to shape scientific and technical communication. Literature and film are invaluable sources to examine such processes, and because of this, I often incorporate literary and film materials in my SST classes.

Español para la ciencia y la tecnología

He desarrollado y enseñado cursos para ayudar a actuales y futuros científicos, ingenieros y comunicadores de la ciencia a usar sus habilidades lingüísticas en español en contextos científicos y técnicos. Mi trabajo es parte del área creciente del español para la ciencia y la tecnología, un subcampo de lo que se conoce como español para fines específicos. También me interesa el área estrechamente relacionada del español para la comunicación ambiental.

Creo que, como parte de un enfoque integral al aprendizaje de idiomas aplicado, es importante para los estudiantes, ya sea en humanidades, ciencias o ingeniería, pensar críticamente sobre los procesos sociales, culturales e históricos que han dado forma y continúan dando forma a la comunicación científica y técnica. La literatura y el cine son fuentes invaluables para examinar tales procesos y, por ello, a menudo incorporo materiales literarios y cinematográficos en mis clases de español para la ciencia y la tecnología.
